National recognition for UCLan photography graduate

The imaginative work of a UCLan photography graduate has been highly commended at the Guardian’s 2008 Student Media Awards.

Si Miller, 22 from Newcastle-upon-Tyne, was one of only five students nationally to be shortlisted for the prestigious title of Guardian Student Photographer of the Year.

Recently, Simon attended the glittering awards ceremony in London where he was able to present his portfolio to Roger Tooth, Picture Editor at the Guardian.

Si commented: “Even though I didn’t win the overall competition I received some great feedback from Roger and the judging panel.  The whole event was a great experience and hopefully my success will spur the University’s current photography students to follow in my footsteps.”

Si’s nominated picture explores the whole area of self-reflection and personal living spaces. “The idea is that sometimes, even in a location where people should feel safe and familiar, there can still be a sense of loneliness, vulnerability and isolation.”

UCLan photography lecturer Adam Murray added: “Si is a talented, motivated and proactive photographer and I’m not surprised that his work was selected for the Guardian’s shortlist.  His use of lighting and scene construction is particularly impressive and I’m sure he is set for a successful career. It was a major achievement to be selected as one of only five students short-listed for this national award.”

Ealier this year Si won the Photographer of the Year title at the UCLan Media Awards.  Since leaving the University he has set up his own freelance photography business and has recently been commissioned to carry out a major assignment for the Preston-based company/charity Recycling Lives. He has also returned to the University to deliver guest lectures to current students. The talented graduate’s long term ambition is to break into fashion photography.

For the last 30 years the Guardian Student Media Awards have sought out the best student writers, designers, broadcasters, editors and photographers.

The awards have helped make media moguls out of mere mortals, including those of high-profile winners such as Andrew Rawnsley, Mark Frith, Rankin, Jonathan Freedland, Rachel Newsome and Emily Barr.
