Faculty of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences

The Faculty of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences brings together for the first time at UCLan, three key clinical training programmes under the stewardship of the Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences. This has been enabled by a University commitment to provide purpose-built facilities that are amongst the most modern and high-tech in Europe but also a collaborative academic commitment to enable our students in all three areas, to train and learn together, ensuring our graduates emerge into the workplace as leaders in integrated and inter-professional clinical practice.

UCLan has demonstrated over the past 10 years its ambition to develop high quality clinical training programmes.

The first of these was the Master's in Pharmacy (MPharm Hons) accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council. Recruiting up to 120 students per year, the programme ensures the students receive a contemporary education and training, facilitating their success in the professional arena, where they are renowned for their ability to perform at a high standard.

The Bachelor in Dental Surgery (BDS) began in 2007 after accreditation by the General Dental Council (GDC) and remains the only surviving English graduate-only entry programme. It has attracted highly complimentary reports from the GDC and has now produced over 120 new dentists. It is one of very few UK programmes whose graduates have all achieved foundation programme placements, a testimony to the quality of the training.

The newest School, the School of Medicine, opened its doors in September 2015, having received approval from the General Medical Council (GMC) to establish and recruit international students on to a UK MBBS qualification. Such students would otherwise have limited access to UK educational courses. Our MBBS will produce global doctors.

Bringing all three Schools together in one Faculty provides a unique opportunity in the Health Education sector for inter-professional learning experiences, ensuring all graduates are fully aware of the importance of patient care being delivered in a co-ordinated, multi-professional environment.

The Faculty also offers a suite of undergraduate level programmes and a wide range of postgraduate medical, dental and pharmacy-related courses for practitioners and scientists who want to develop skills and knowledge in clinical and non-clinical roles, with the objective of increasing specialisation, enhancing leadership skills and developing practice.

Research, Innovation and Knowledge Exchange

The creation of the Faculty of Clinical and Biomedical Sciences allows multidisciplinary teams of basic and research active clinicians to work together to achieve an effective and sustainable critical mass. The Faculty is well placed to exploit exciting new multidisciplinary approaches to translational academic research to have a real impact on society. The Faculty has the vision of an integrated discovery path from bench to bedside along with appropriate research facilities and collaborations.

The aims of the Faculty are to produce world leading and internationally recognised research groups and outputs in the priority areas and lay a solid foundation for the next REF while building research environment in terms of research space and facility and supporting the development of early career researchers.
