Frank Harrington is a Senior Lecturer, specialising in Deaf Studies and Religion, Culture and Society, and teaches on both programmes at undergraduate and postgraduate level. He is a Registered Qualified BSL/English Interpreter, and his main areas of interest are Interpreting and translation Theory, Social Policy, Disability Studies, Moral Theology and Christian Theology. He is currently studying for a PhD in Roman Catholic Canon Law.
Frank Harrington first joined the university back in 1997, as a researcher on a HEFCE funded project exploring access to Higher Education for Deaf students, in particular in interpreter mediated classrooms. He became a full time permanent member of staff in 2000. He is a Registered Qualified British Sign Language (BSL)/English Interpreter, and has worked closely on the development and delivery of the MA/PG Dip in BSL/English Interpreting and Translation for over 15 years. He teaches on both the undergraduate and postgraduate Deaf Studies programmes
Having previously studied for the Roman Catholic Ministry for 5 years, he is also involved in the delivery of the undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Religion, Culture and society, specialising in Moral Theology, Sexual Ethics and Canon Law. He is currently reading for a PhD on the Roman Catholic Canon Law of Marriage.
In addition to his involvement in two degree programmes, Frank is also an experienced Equality and Diversity trainer, and has been involved in the design and delivery of various E&D programmes both within the university and for external organisations. He also has a keen interest in Social Policy, and has taught modules on this as part of the Deaf Studies programme in the past.
Outside of the University, Frank is a member of the Board of Trustees for the National Registers for Communication Professionals with Deaf and Deafblind People (NRCPD), which is the national regulatory body for BSL/English Interpreters. He is also a Trustee of Preston Faith Forum. In addition, he is a keen musician, having studied Voice and Composition at Birmingham Conservatoire. He has worked with a number of Choirs and Operatic Societies in the north west, and aside from singing and writing, he plays Bass, Guitar, Saxophone, Piano and Percussion.
