Parents and Carers Guide

UCLan's Parents and Carers guide to University

With increased tuition fees and so many choices, it’s more important than ever for prospective students to make informed decisions about higher education. As a parent, you’re likely to be one of the most important and trusted sources of information and advice to your son or daughter along the way. We hope that these pages give you the information you need to guide and support your child through the decision-making and application process.

Those Early Decisions

You may be at the stage where A Levels or BTECs still need to be chosen. Ask your child how much a particular subject interests them? How good do they think they are at the subject? Will they enjoy studying it in greater depth? Is a university degree worth it?  When considering your options it’s worth bearing in mind, that the transferable skills and experience you learn at university are the key to many careers, and a degree opens the door to careers like doctors, lawyers and other professionals. If you are considering university then take a look at the wide range of degree choices on offer to help make that final decision, many of our courses are accessible with both BTEC and A Level qualifications.

Applying to Uni and Getting Ready

If your son or daughter has decided to go to university and knows what subject they want to study and where, they can now write their application and plan for their new life. There is plenty of help to guide you through this next stage on the UCAS website. Your son or daughter can choose from up to 5 universities, each university will consider their application and personal statement, and if they feel they will be a good student for their course, make them an offer. They then have a first (firm) and second (insurance) choice for when they get their results. Once they get their offer, your encouragement and advice will be reassuring as they prepare to go to university. See our great guides below for these next steps.

Why UCLan?

The University of Central Lancashire sits at the heart of the vibrant, affordable city of Preston.  Well-known for our friendliness, we offer a supportive environment where our students can be themselves and find success.

Did you know that we are ranked in the top 3.3% of universities in the world by the Centre for World University Rankings 2017?  And if that wasn’t enough, it’s good to know that many of our academics also undertake world-leading research which helps to inform our teaching and benefit our students.  Add to that the fact that we have recently risen 20 places in The Guardian’s University Guide, with eight of our subject areas ranked in the Top 20 nationally. If you need to know anything else, please ask us a question.
