UCLan uses an ISO14001 certified Environmental Management System (EMS) to identify, manage and mitigate its impact on the environment.
As part of the development of the EMS an Initial Environmental Review (IER) of UCLan activities, products and services was undertaken to identify the way our operations interact with the environment. These interactions are called environmental aspects; the University now has a register of all the identified environmental aspects.

The EMS has been pivotal to UCLan’s success in achieving its sustainability targets. In October 2010 UCLan was first awarded ISO14001 certification for the system, with re-certification in October 2013. In 2016 UCLan was an early adopter of the new ISO14001:2015 standard and is now ISO14001 certified until October 2019. Having ISO14001 demonstrates that the system is effective and that UCLan are committed to environmental sustainability.
UCLan implements its EMS Policies and continual improvement element through an Environmental Management Plan.

UCLan is a large and diverse institution. To facilitate related internal communication between the various levels and functions of the organisation an Environmental and Sustainable Development Governance Structure (.docx) has been established.
The governance structure involves a series of regular meetings at various levels. These enable senior management, students, School and Services staff to review, discuss, develop and implement the sustainable development strategy. This allows UCLan to maintain the continual improvement and management review elements of the EMS.
